Anonymous asked: Heyyy I'm looking to get a new younger rat and i've been told different things on how old they can be to leave their mother I've been told 5 weeks is a good time after the babies have been split into sexes and 8 weeks from another person and I'm looking to getting one as soon as possible so yeah... what do you think?
Mod 2: Baby rats under 5 weeks of age should not be adopted out, as they still need time with mom. However, once they are old enough to be separated by sex, it’s fine to adopt them (especially because many of the babies will have been separated from mom by necessity at this point!). Getting a rat at 5 weeks vs 8 weeks is kind of like deciding whether to get a very young puppy or a 4 month old puppy - as they’re at different stages in development, their needs and personalities will be very different. That’s my two cents, at least. :)
